On Saturday, October 31st, the Paramount Academy for the Arts hosted their first ever Halloween Storytime at the Barnes & Noble Arboretum store in honor of Room on the Broom coming to the Paramount Theatre on Sunday, November 8th at 2pm. We have hosted many story times around town over the years, but since this special reading fell on Halloween, we also had really cool witch hat crafts and a costume contest. We expected some adorable fun, and what we got was a record number of families enjoying an interactive reading with Paramount members! We could not have managed the amazing turn out without the support of the National Charity League volunteers, who came out and helped make the day a success.
Room On The Broom is a wild adventure that celebrates friendship, the fall season, and the wonderful world that author Julia Donaldson has created: A witch and her cat are flying happily on their broomstick – until a stormy wind blows away the witch’s hat, bow, and wand. A helpful dog, bird, and frog find the witch’s lost things and they all hop on the broom for a ride. But this broomstick is not meant for five and – CRACK – the broom snaps in two! When a hungry dragon appears, who will save the poor witch? And will there ever be room on the broom for everyone? Storytime attendees were witness to a performance by Paramount’s own Jess Evans.
After the story, the costume contest proved be very challenging for Education & Outreach Director, Jennifer Luck, to judge. There were some incredible Elsas and Disney princesses; Olaf was in the house, along with some fierce Elmos, and of course, Dracula made an appearance. Even literary heroine, Fancy Nancy, tried to steal the show. But the winners, hands down, were Chris and Karen Craxton with their four kids (Chloe, Eva, and twins Asher and Lucas), who came dressed as characters from The Wizard of Oz. The children’s grandmother made the costumes by hand, and was thrilled to hear her work had won the family tickets to see Room On The Broom! This will be the Craxton Family’s first visit to the Paramount Theatre, and we hope you’ll join them.
Look forward to more Barnes & Noble Storytimes hosted by the Paramount, and be sure to like us on Facebook for information on all things family and education.
